The historic mining site, over 500 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will introduce you to the history of metal mining. Tickets can be purchased at the Boží Dar information centre.
The largest mine in the Zlatý Kopec – Kaff district was the Johannes Mine, which was in operation without any significant breaks from the 16th century until the 1870s. In the 1920s and again in the 1950s-1960s, mining exploration was still carried out here. It is an exceptionally well-preserved complex of historic mine workings, in which the old miners carved out underground chambers of enormous dimensions, the like of which can rarely be seen elsewhere in the world. In this respect, the Johannes Mine is quite exceptional. These unique chambers, the largest of which is 60 x 20 m in plan dimensions and 10 to 12 m high, can now be seen by anyone who goes underground in the Johannes Mine, which the town of Boží Dar has opened to the public with the help of a grant from the European Union’s Objective 3 programme.
